Give the tool a bounded task
A useful prompt explains the task, intended audience, context that is safe to share, and the format you need. Ask the model to separate known information from assumptions, identify uncertainties, and suggest what should be checked. For example, a learner can request a plain-language explanation of a concept and a list of questions to verify using approved materials.
Generative tools produce plausible text, not guaranteed truth. They may invent citations, omit exceptions, or misunderstand maritime terminology. Asking for confidence or a source list does not prove the answer is correct.
Protect data and verify the result
Use public or synthetic examples unless your organization has approved the tool and the information for that use. Do not enter crew records, personal data, vessel security details, cargo information, company documents, or other confidential material into an unapproved service.
Before using a draft, verify facts against current authoritative references, check numbers and units, remove unsupported statements, and follow company policy. AI can help with learning or first drafts; it cannot replace approved procedures or professional judgment.
