Combine domain knowledge with digital fluency
Maritime experience remains valuable when working with AI because the context determines whether an output makes sense. Useful foundational skills include understanding data quality, reading charts and trends, asking precise questions, checking sources, and explaining uncertainty. Basic spreadsheet or programming skills may help for more technical roles, but not every AI-related task requires building a model.
Roles may involve operations, maintenance, data analysis, software, safety, training, compliance, or product implementation. Job titles and requirements vary by employer; learning one tool does not guarantee a role or promotion.
Build evidence through small projects
A practical portfolio can show how you frame a problem, choose appropriate sample data, define a baseline, evaluate errors, and document limitations. Use public, synthetic, or permissioned data and avoid revealing confidential employer information. A good project explains what the system should not be used for as clearly as what it can do.
Continue learning from current authoritative sources and seek feedback from people with relevant maritime and technical expertise.
